Bernie Nicholls is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League for 18 seasons from 1981–82 until 1998–99. He was born on January 1, 1961 in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada to parents Doug and Shirley Nicholls. He has two older sisters, Donna and Darlene. He grew up playing hockey and baseball in Haliburton. He attended high school at West Hill Secondary School in Thornhill, Ontario. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round, 73rd overall, of the 1978 NHL Entry Draft.

Nicholls made his NHL debut with the Kings during the 1981–82 season. He scored his first NHL goal against the Detroit Red Wings on October 10, 1981. He played in all 80 games for the Kings during his rookie season, scoring 19 goals and 45 points. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. He continued to play well for the Kings, scoring 30 or more goals in each of his first five seasons with the team. He scored a career-high 49 goals and 129 points during the 1984–85 season. He was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team.

The Kings traded Nicholls to the Edmonton Oilers on November 2, 1988. He played parts of two seasons with the Oilers, winning the Stanley Cup with the team in 1988–89. He was traded to the New York Rangers on October 4, 1990. He played parts of four seasons with the Rangers, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals with the team in 1992–93. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on October 1, 1994. He played parts of two seasons with the Blackhawks before being traded to the San Jose Sharks on November 28, 1996.

Nicholls retired from the NHL after 18 seasons following the 1998–99 season. He finished his NHL career with 358 goals and 873 points in 1,127 games. He also appeared in 19 Stanley Cup playoff games, scoring four goals and 11 points.

After retiring from playing professional hockey, Nicholls became a hockey coach and scout. He was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings from 2006 to 2010. He currently serves as a scout for the Kings.

Nicholls has been married twice. His first marriage was to Julie Nicholls from 1982 to 1991. They had two children together, Jamie and Jordyn. His second marriage is to Stacey Nicholls. They have been married since 1998 and have two children together, Jack and Sydney.

1Nicholls's wife had been bedridden since the sixth month of her pregnancy when he was traded by the New York Rangers to the Edmonton Oilers on 4 October 1991. He declared that he would not report to any team in Canada while his wife was bedridden. The Rangers refused to leave him out of the deal, and the Oilers suspended him for refusing to join them. Heather Nicholls gave birth to a boy and a girl on 29 November, 15 days ahead of the due date. An elated Nicholls announced he'd play for Edmonton, having forfeited over $200,000 in salary during his holdout, and made his debut on 10 December. Nicholls was widely praised for putting his career in jeopardy so that he could be with his wife.
