Barbara Hendricks (born December 20, 1948) is an American operatic soprano and concert singer. She has sung a wide variety of roles on the opera stage and in concert, but is particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Hendricks was born in Stephens, Arkansas, and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a choir director and her mother was a piano teacher. She began taking piano lessons at the age of five and singing in the church choir at the age of eight. She received her early education in the public schools of Stephens and Little Rock, Arkansas.
In 1966, Hendricks won a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. She made her professional debut in 1968 as a member of the New York City Opera chorus. In 1969, she made her solo debut with the company as the First Spirit in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. She went on to sing a wide variety of roles with the New York City Opera over the next decade, including such roles as Susanna in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Pamina in The Magic Flute, and Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.
In 1979, Hendricks made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera as Pamina in The Magic Flute. She has since sung a number of roles with the company, including Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and the title role in Massenet’s Manon.
Hendricks has also appeared as a guest artist with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has made numerous recordings for such labels as RCA Victor, Deutsche Grammophon, and Philips.
Hendricks is married to Swedish bass-baritone Hakan Hagegard. They have two daughters.
Hendricks has been awarded honorary degrees from a number of universities, including Yale University, Harvard University, and the University of Arkansas. In 2005, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President George W. Bush.

The biggest threat to refugees is lack of understanding. When I started working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees some 24 years ago, I gave myself the task of trying to peel away the ignorance and change the way people think about refugees. Take this country, Sweden, as an example. When refugees arrive in a new neighborhood, there is no one there to help the people who live there understand who the refugees are, where they come from, to get people to meet. And not enough is done to prepare the refugees for a life of dignity in a new country. (March, 2011)
