Albert Moses was born on October 9, 1892, in New York City. His parents were immigrants from Russia. He had four brothers and sisters. He attended public schools in New York City. He began his career as a newsboy. He later worked as a messenger boy and then as an office boy. He became a clerk in a law office. He studied law at night and was admitted to the bar in 1916. He began to practice law in New York City. In 1918, he married Sarah Goldman. They had two children.
Moses became interested in public service. He was appointed to the New York City Planning Commission in 1926. He served on the commission for 20 years. He was responsible for the development of many parks and playgrounds in New York City. He also helped to develop the city’s mass transit system. In 1934, he was appointed to the New York State Parks Commission. He served on the commission for 16 years. He helped to develop the state park system.
In 1946, Moses was appointed chairman of the New York State Triborough Bridge Authority. He served in this position for 20 years. He oversaw the construction of the Triborough Bridge, the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Throgs Neck Bridge, and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
In 1955, Moses was appointed chairman of the New York World’s Fair Commission. He oversaw the construction of the New York State Pavilion at the fair.
Moses retired from public service in 1968. He died on July 29, 1981, at the age of 88.
