Alan Doyle is a Canadian musician, actor, producer, and author. He is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the Canadian folk rock band Great Big Sea. Doyle has also released three solo albums, and has acted in several films and television series, most notably as the character Walter in the CBC comedy series Republic of Doyle.

Doyle was born in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on May 17, 1969. His parents, Rose and Tom Doyle, were both teachers. He has three sisters: Sharon, Lisa, and Debbie. Doyle was educated at St. Bonaventure’s College and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Doyle’s musical career began in the early 1990s with the Newfoundland folk rock band Great Big Sea. The band achieved mainstream success in Canada and the United States with their 1997 album, Up!, which was certified platinum in Canada and gold in the US. Great Big Sea released a total of nine studio albums before disbanding in 2013.

Doyle’s solo career began in 2003 with the release of the album Boy on Bridge. His second album, So Let’s Go, was released in 2007. Doyle’s third album, A Week at the Warehouse, was released in 2013.

Doyle has also appeared in several films and television series. He made his film debut in the 2000 film The Shipping News, and has since appeared in such films as The Grand Seduction (2013) and Grown Up Movie Star (2009). He has also had recurring roles in the television series Republic of Doyle (2010-2014) and Bellevue (2017).
