Abraham Laboriel is a Mexican bass player, session musician, composer, producer, and instructor. He is considered one of the most influential bassists of our time. His career has spanned over five decades and he has worked with some of the most famous musicians in the world.
Laboriel was born in Mexico City on February 5, 1947. His father, Abe Laboriel Sr., was a well-known jazz guitarist in Mexico. His mother was a singer. He has four brothers, all of whom are musicians. Laboriel began playing guitar at the age of six and later switched to bass. He studied classical guitar and composition at the Mexico City Conservatory of Music.
Laboriel’s professional career began in the early 1960s when he started playing with Mexican rock and roll bands. He soon became one of the most in-demand session musicians in Mexico. In the 1970s, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in studio work. He quickly became one of the most sought-after session bassists in Hollywood.
Laboriel has worked on over 3,000 albums and has been featured on countless movie and television soundtracks. He has played on records by artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John, and Barbra Streisand. He has also worked with film composer John Williams on many of his film scores, including E.T., Star Wars, and Jurassic Park.
In addition to his work as a session musician, Laboriel has also released several solo albums and has composed music for film and television. He has won two Grammy Awards and has been nominated for four others.
Laboriel is married to singer-songwriter Susana Laboriel. They have two sons, Abraham Laboriel Jr. and Mateo Laboriel.
