Dennis DeYoung is an American singer-songwriter, musician and producer best known for being a founding member of the rock band Styx. DeYoung has been credited as the writer of more than half of the band’s songs, including the hits “Lady,” “Come Sail Away” and “Babe.” He is also known for his work as a solo artist, with his 1984 album Desert Moon selling more than two million copies.
DeYoung was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 18, 1947. His parents, Edward and Mary, were of Irish descent. DeYoung has three sisters: Diane, Carol and Theresa. He was raised in the city’s Roseland neighborhood and attended Catholic schools. DeYoung’s interest in music began at an early age; he took piano lessons and played in a band called The Tradewinds while in high school.
After graduating from high school in 1965, DeYoung attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He left college after one year to pursue a career in music. In 1971, he auditioned for the rock band Styx and was hired as the keyboardist and lead vocalist. The band went on to achieve great success in the 1970s and 1980s, with DeYoung writing and singing some of their biggest hits.
DeYoung left Styx in 1999, but has continued to tour and release solo albums. His most recent album, 26 East, Vol. 1, was released in 2016. DeYoung has been married to Suzanne DeYoung since 1970. The couple has three children: Patrick, Matthew and Sarah.
DeYoung has an estimated net worth of $20 million. He has earned most of his wealth from his successful career as a musician, both with Styx and as a solo artist.
