Davis Grubb was born in Charleston, West Virginia, on July 18, 1923. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a schoolteacher. He had two brothers and one sister. He was educated in the public schools of Charleston and graduated from high school in 1941. He then attended Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) for one year before transferring to Marshall College (now Marshall University). He graduated from Marshall in 1945 with a bachelor’s degree in English.
After graduation, Grubb worked as a reporter for the Charleston Gazette and as a public relations specialist for the West Virginia Department of Health. In 1950, he began working as a freelance writer. His first novel, The Night of the Hunter, was published in 1953. The book was adapted into a film of the same name in 1955, directed by Charles Laughton and starring Robert Mitchum.
Grubb’s other novels include Fools’ Parade (1961), The Intruder (1962), and The Watchers (1964). His short stories have been collected in several anthologies, including The Night of the Hunter and Other Stories (1955) and The Intruder and Other Stories (1963).
Grubb died of cancer on September 17, 1980, at the age of 57.
