David Lee Roth is an American rock singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer of the rock band Van Halen. He is also known for his solo career, which includes the hit singles “California Girls” and “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody”.
Roth was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on October 10, 1954. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Europe. Roth has two sisters. He was raised in a middle-class neighborhood in Pasadena, California.
Roth attended Pasadena City College, where he studied art and music. He began his musical career in the early 1970s as a member of the rock band Mammoth. In 1974, he joined Van Halen.
With Van Halen, Roth achieved great success. The band’s debut album, Van Halen (1978), was a huge commercial success, reaching number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single, “Eruption”, was a huge hit, reaching number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Van Halen’s follow-up albums, Van Halen II (1979) and Women and Children First (1980), were also commercial successes, reaching numbers 6 and 4 on the Billboard 200 chart, respectively. The band’s fourth album, Fair Warning (1981), was less successful, reaching only number 35 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Roth left Van Halen in 1985 to pursue a solo career. His debut solo album, Crazy from the Heat (1985), was a commercial success, reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single, “California Girls”, was a huge hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Roth’s second solo album, Eat ‘Em and Smile (1986), was also a commercial success, reaching number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album’s lead single, “Yankee Rose”, was a top 10 hit in the United States.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Roth’s solo career began to decline. His third solo album, Skyscraper (1988), was a commercial disappointment, reaching only number 45 on the Billboard 200 chart. Roth’s fourth and final solo album, A Little Ain’t Enough (1991), was also a commercial disappointment, reaching only number 54 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 1996, Roth rejoined Van Halen for a reunion tour. The tour was a success and led to the release of a live album, Van Halen Live: Right Here, Right Now (1993).
In 2006, Roth once again left Van Halen to focus on his solo career. Since then, he has released two live albums, Diamond Dave (2003) and Live: Right Here, Right Now Volume 2 (2006).
Roth has had a successful solo career, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Roth is currently married to his second wife, Stine Schyberg. The couple have two children together.
