David Hamilton Murdock (born April 17, 1935) is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of the private holding company The Murdock Group, which he founded in 1969. Murdock is also the majority owner of the Hawaiian island of Lanai and its two Four Seasons resorts.
Murdock was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the son of Hazel (née Hamilton) and Earl Murdock. His father was a milkman and his mother was a homemaker. He has three younger sisters. Murdock grew up in a poor, rural area and did not finish high school. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17 and served for two years.
After his discharge from the Marines, Murdock moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as a door-to-door salesman for Encyclopedia Britannica. He later started his own business selling insurance and real estate. In the 1960s, Murdock began investing in distressed properties. He eventually acquired a controlling interest in a number of companies, including Castle & Cooke, Inc., a real estate and food company.
In 1985, Murdock took Castle & Cooke public and used the proceeds to buy a controlling interest in Dole Food Company, Inc. In 1991, he acquired the James Dole plantation on the island of Lanai in Hawaii. Murdock has since invested heavily in Lanai, building two Four Seasons resorts and a residential community. He also owns the island’s only newspaper, The Lanai Times.
Murdock is estimated to have a net worth of $2.7 billion as of 2020. He has been married three times and has four children.
