Cyndi Lauper is an American singer, songwriter, actress and activist. She is best known for her hits “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time”, and for her Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning work on the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots”. Lauper has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has won numerous awards, including an Oscar nomination for her work on the film “The Goonies”.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 22, 1953, Lauper is the daughter of Fred Lauper, a jazz saxophonist, and Catrine Lauper, a visual artist. She has two sisters, Ellen and Michele. Lauper was raised in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens and attended Richmond Hill High School. She began her musical career as a member of the rock band Blue Angel, which released one album in 1980 before disbanding.

Lauper achieved mainstream success with her 1983 debut solo album “She’s So Unusual”, which became the first album by a female artist to achieve four top-five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album’s lead single “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” became an international anthem for female empowerment. Lauper’s follow-up album “True Colors” was equally successful, spawning the hit singles “Time After Time” and “Change of Heart”.

Lauper has continued to enjoy success in her solo career, with her albums “Hat Full of Stars” (1993), “Merry Christmas… Have a Nice Life” (1998) and “Memphis Blues” (2010) all receiving critical acclaim. She has also ventured into acting, with roles in films such as “Vibes” (1988), “The Goonies” (1985) and “A Night at the Roxbury” (1998). In 2013, Lauper made her Broadway debut as the composer and lyricist of the musical “Kinky Boots”, for which she won a Tony Award for Best Original Score.

Lauper is an outspoken advocate for LGBT rights and has been a longtime supporter of the Human Rights Campaign. In 2008, she was given the HRC’s Ally for Equality Award. Lauper has also been active in support of AIDS research and prevention. In 1985, she recorded the song “We Are the World” with other artists to raise money for famine relief in Africa.

Quotes

1[on the music video "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"] It was very important to me that every girl was represented - Hispanic girls, African-American girls. I told Edd (Griles - the video director) that we had to have multiracial people too. At that time, everybody who was in videos was either all white or all black. I figured, "You know what? Here's what I see missing. Let's go for it." There still wasn't as much integration as there should have been, but I feel like a lot of little girls who saw the video saw themselves, and that was the most important thing.
2My mother said I was a little odd as a kid. I was alone a lot, but I didn't feel alone. When I sang with those records, I'd be Julie Andrews and there was Rex Harrison sitting on my mother's bed. I was Mitzi Gaynor. I was Ezio Pinza. I think she had Mary Martin too - I was all of them. I was pretty good until they sang duets.
3When "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" came out, I was thirty. They were saying "How old are you?". And even then I was like "Why? You think I'm a car? You need to check under the hood and kick the tires?".
4There have been great things that happened to me. If they didn't happen to me, I wouldn't be here. Everything was supposed to happen to me. I wouldn't have the sight that I have, I wouldn't have the creative moments that I have, I wouldn't be able to articulate what I need to articulate. I wouldn't have my son. I wouldn't have my husband. I'm a lucky woman. Everything. Every single thing. There are no mistakes.
5(on her album "At Last") It was an idea to do a special project. because people would come see me live and go, "Gee, I didn't know she could sing." And I'd be like, "Yeah, you ever tried to sing 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', pal?".
6You can't stamp out individuality - there's too many of us.
7I lucked out when I started to sing. I'd already experienced failing at everything else
8On being a feminist: I'm a bra-burner from way back!
9You can laugh when I talk, but not when I sing. People used to throw rocks at me for my clothes... now they wanna know where I buy them.
10I absolutely refuse to reveal my age. What am I - a car?
11You always have to remember - no matter what you're told - that God loves all the flowers, even the wild ones that grow on the side of the highway.
