Saralegui was born in Havana, Cuba, on January 29, 1948. Her parents were both Cuban journalists who had been forced into exile by the Cuban government. Saralegui was raised in Miami, Florida, and attended Catholic schools. She began her career in journalism as a teenager, writing for a Miami Spanish-language newspaper.
Saralegui’s career took off in the early 1980s when she began working as a radio host. In 1989, she began hosting El show de Cristina, a talk show that became one of the most popular programs on Univision. The show ran for 21 years and made Saralegui a household name.
In addition to her work on television, Saralegui has also been active in film and theatre. She made her film debut in the 1995 comedy Miami Rhapsody and has also appeared in the films The Perez Family (1995) and The Lost City (2005). On stage, she has appeared in productions of The Vagina Monologues and The House of Bernarda Alba.
Saralegui is also an entrepreneur. In 1994, she founded Cristina Saralegui Enterprises, a multimedia company that produces television shows, magazines, and websites. The company also has a line of home products, including bedding and home decor.
