William “Count” Basie was born on August 21, 1904, in Red Bank, New Jersey. His parents, Harvey Lee and Lillian Basie, were both African American. His father worked as a coachman and caretaker for a wealthy white family. His mother was a homemaker. Basie had four brothers and sisters. He was the youngest of the five children.
Basie’s early education took place at the Red Bank Colored School. When he was seven years old, his father died. His mother then took a job as a domestic worker to support the family. Basie began playing the piano when he was eight years old. He taught himself how to play by ear.
Basie’s first professional gig was playing in a band led by Fats Waller. He then went on to play with other well-known musicians such as Bennie Moten and Lester Young. In 1935, Basie formed his own band, the Count Basie Orchestra. The band became very popular and toured all over the United States.
Basie’s orchestra recorded many hit songs, including “One O’Clock Jump” and “Jumpin’ at the Woodside.” The band also appeared in several movies, including “Cabin in the Sky” and “Stormy Weather.”
Basie won nine Grammy Awards during his career. He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1988, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Basie died of cancer on April 26, 1984, in Hollywood, Florida. He was 79 years old.
