Christina Pickles is an English actress. She is known for her roles as Nurse Helen Rosenthal in the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere, Judi Silver in the CBS sitcom Friends, and Virginia Stemple in the NBC comedy-drama Medium.
Pickles was born on 17 February 1935 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Her parents are Arthur and Edna Pickles. She has two sisters, Barbara and Sheila. Pickles was educated at Calder High School and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Pickles began her career as a stage actress. She made her West End debut in 1956 in The Sleeping Prince. She appeared in numerous stage productions in the UK and US, including The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and My Fair Lady.
Pickles’ first television role was in the BBC series Z-Cars. She appeared in episodes of The Avengers, The Saint, and The Persuaders!. In 1982, she landed the role of Nurse Helen Rosenthal in the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere. She appeared in all six seasons of the show, from 1982 to 1988.
In 1994, Pickles began appearing as Judi Silver in the CBS sitcom Friends. She appeared in 27 episodes of the show over the course of its ten-season run, from 1994 to 2004.
From 2005 to 2010, Pickles had a recurring role as Virginia Stemple, the mother of Patricia Arquette’s character Allison DuBois, in the NBC comedy-drama Medium.
Pickles has also appeared in films such as The Elephant Man (1980), Gandhi (1982), and Legends of the Fall (1994).
Pickles has been married twice. Her first husband was actor George Hamilton, with whom she had one son, actor Nicholas Hamilton. The couple divorced in 1972. Her second husband was director Stanley Donen, with whom she had two daughters, Jennifer and Charlotte. The couple divorced in 1985.
