Chris Spielman is a former American football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons. He played college football for The Ohio State University, and was a two-time consensus All-American. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft, and also played professionally for the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns.

Spielman was born on October 11, 1965, in Canton, Ohio. He is the middle child of three born to parents Sandy and Chuck Spielman. His father was a high school football coach, and his mother was a homemaker. Spielman has two older sisters, Sherri and Stephanie. He was raised in a Catholic household.
Spielman attended Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. As a senior in 1982, he was named the Associated Press (AP) Ohio High School Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the USA Today All-USA high school football team.
Spielman played college football at Ohio State University from 1983 to 1987. He was a four-year starter and finished his career with 546 tackles, which ranks second in school history. He was a two-time consensus All-American and was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 1986.
Spielman was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft. He played for the Lions from 1988 to 1995. He was named to the Pro Bowl four times and was named a first-team All-Pro in 1993. Spielman was traded to the Buffalo Bills in 1996, where he played for one season. He then signed with the Cleveland Browns as a free agent in 1997 and played for them until his retirement in 1999.
Spielman finished his NFL career with 1,138 tackles, 20 sacks, and 12 interceptions. He was inducted into the Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
Spielman’s wife, Stefanie, died of breast cancer in 2009. The couple had four children together: Madison, Noah, Macy, and Audrey. Spielman has since remarried and has two stepdaughters.
