Chris Cornell (born Christopher John Boyle; July 20, 1964 – May 18, 2017) was an American musician, singer and songwriter. He was best known as the lead vocalist for the rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. He was also known for his solo work and for his contributions as a songwriter to songs such as “Black Hole Sun”, “Rusty Cage”, “Outshined”, and “Blow Up the Outside World”. He released four solo studio albums, Euphoria Morning (1999), Carry On (2007), Scream (2009), and Higher Truth (2015). Cornell received a Golden Globe Award nomination for his song “The Promise”, which he co-wrote and performed for the 2016 film of the same name.
Cornell was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, and attended Christ the King Catholic elementary school, where he sang in the school choir. As a teenager, he sold drugs before starting his music career. He was a member of a number of bands before finding success with Soundgarden in the early 1990s. With Soundgarden, Cornell became one of the leading figures of the grunge movement.
In 1994, Cornell collaborated with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder on the song “Hunger Strike” from Temple of the Dog, a tribute album for the late Andrew Wood. He also worked with Alice in Chains on the song “Would?” from their 1992 album Dirt. In 2001, he formed Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine and released three albums with them before amicably leaving in 2007.
Cornell released his first solo album, Euphoria Morning, in 1999. He subsequently released three more solo albums: Carry On (2007), Scream (2009), and Higher Truth (2015). His final album, Songbook (2011), was a collection of acoustic versions of his songs.
Cornell is considered one of the greatest rock singers of all time. He had a wide vocal range spanning five octaves. His work with Soundgarden and Audioslave was characterized by his powerful vocal delivery and use of dynamic songwriting, which often incorporated unusual time signatures and tonal experimentation.
Cornell died by suicide on May 18, 2017, at the age of 52. His death was widely mourned by the music community.
