Fact
Wore number 34, his college number, for most of his career with Philadelphia and Phoenix, but switched to 32 in his last season (1991-1992) with the 76ers as a tribute to Earvin "Magic" Johnson, who was forced to retire before that season due to being HIV positive.
Charles Barkley is an American former professional basketball player who is currently an analyst on Inside the NBA. Nicknamed “Chuck”, “Sir Charles”, and “The Round Mound of Rebound”, Barkley established himself as one of the National Basketball Association’s most dominant power forwards. He was drafted as the fifth overall pick in the 1984 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, with whom he played eight seasons. He was selected to the All-NBA First Team five times, the All-NBA Second Team five times, and once to the All-NBA Third Team. He earned eleven NBA All-Star Game appearances and was named the All-Star MVP in 1991. In 1993, he was voted the league’s Most Valuable Player and during the NBA’s 50th anniversary, named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games and won two gold medals as a member of the United States’ “Dream Team”. Barkley is an inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, being inducted in 2006 for his individual career, and in 2010 as a member of the “Dream Team”. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame by former teammate Michael Jordan.
Barkley was born and raised in Leeds, Alabama, ten miles (16 km) outside Birmingham, and attended Leeds High School. As a junior, Barkley stood 5’10” (1.78 m) and weighed 220 pounds (100 kg). He failed to make the varsity team and was named as a reserve. However, during the summer Barkley grew to 6’4″ (1.93 m) and earned a starting position on the varsity as a senior. He averaged 19.1 points and 17.9 rebounds per game, setting school records for both categories. Barkley led Leeds to the state semifinals in 1981, where they lost to eventual state champions B. C. Rain High School of Mobile.
Barkley accepted a scholarship offer from Auburn University, where he played college basketball for three seasons. He was drafted as the fifth overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 NBA draft. Barkley was selected to the All-NBA First Team five times, the All-NBA Second Team five times, and once to the All-NBA Third Team. He earned eleven NBA All-Star Game appearances and was named the All-Star MVP in 1991. In 1993, he was voted the league’s Most Valuable Player and during the NBA’s 50th anniversary, named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.

Barkley’s professional career began when he was drafted as the fifth overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984. He played eight seasons with the 76ers, winning an NBA championship in his rookie year. He then moved to the Phoenix Suns where he enjoyed some of his best statistical seasons, before being traded back to his original team, the 76ers. Barkley’s final season in the NBA was spent with the Houston Rockets before he retired in 2000.

During his time in the NBA, Barkley was one of its most dominant players and a prolific scorer. He was named to 11 All-Star teams, won an MVP award in 1993, and was voted one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history. Barkley’s physical stature set him apart from most other players; at 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) tall and 250 pounds (113 kg), he was considerably larger than most power forwards of his era. Nevertheless, he possessed great agility for a player his size, enabling him to run the court quickly and finish plays above the rim with ease.
Barkley’s net worth is estimated to be $40 million dollars. His salary during his playing days was $9 million dollars per year. Since retiring from basketball, Barkley has worked as an analyst on Inside the NBA. He has also made numerous appearances on television, including guest starring roles on sitcoms such as 30 Rock and The Simpsons.
