Carrie Nye was born on January 14, 1936 in Louisville, Kentucky. Her parents were both successful attorneys and her upbringing was privileged. She attended private schools and was a debutante. She had a younger sister, Nancy, with whom she was very close.
Nye began her career as a stage actress in the late 1950s. She made her Broadway debut in 1959 in the play The Tender Trap. She went on to have a successful career in theater, film, and television. She won a Tony Award for her performance in the play The Gin Game in 1997.
Nye was married to the actor Richard Mulligan from 1964 until his death in 2000. The couple had two children together.
Nye has been battling cancer since 2006. She is currently in remission.
Nye is a tall, slender woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. She is considered to be a very talented and versatile actress.

In a 2003 interview with The Times-Picayune of New Orleans, Ms. Nye was asked to name the favorite role of her career. "None of them," she said. "I only became an actress so I wouldn't have to cook or make a bed."
