Carrie Murray was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 1,1949. She was the only child of John and Louise Murray. Her father was a doctor and her mother was a homemaker. Carrie was an excellent student and was active in sports and other extracurricular activities. She graduated from high school in 1967 and then attended the University of Maryland, where she earned a degree in biology.

After college, Carrie began her career as a teacher. She taught at a number of schools in the Baltimore area before eventually becoming the head of the science department at a local high school. In her spare time, Carrie enjoyed hiking, camping, and bird watching. She was also an active member of the Sierra Club.

In the early 1990s, Carrie became interested in environmental education. She began volunteering at the Baltimore Zoo and then started working there as an education specialist. She eventually left her teaching job to work full-time at the zoo, where she developed a number of educational programs.

In 2001, Carrie was diagnosed with cancer. She continued to work at the zoo until her death in 2003. The Carrie Murray Nature Center was established in her honor soon after her death.
