Carmen Miranda was a Brazilian singer, dancer, and actress who became one of the most popular entertainers in the world during the 1940s. She was born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha in Várzea da Ovelha e Aliviada, a village in the northern state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on February 9, 1909. Her parents were poor peasants of Portuguese descent. She was the eldest of five children. When she was three years old, her family moved to Rio de Janeiro in search of a better life.

Carmen began her career as a singer in the choro clubs of Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s. She made her first recordings in 1929. In 1933, she moved to Portugal where she became a star. She returned to Brazil in 1939 and made her first film, Alô, Alô Brasil.

Carmen Miranda became an international star after appearing in the film The Gang’s All Here (1943). She was nicknamed “The Brazilian Bombshell” and “The Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat”. She appeared in a number of Hollywood films, including Copacabana (1947), A Date with Judy (1948), and The Painted Veil (1934).

Carmen Miranda died of a heart attack on August 5, 1955, at the age of 46.
