William Charles “Bill” Ayers is an American educator and activist. He is a Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he has worked since 1987. He is also the founder of the small schools movement and was an early leader of the Weather Underground.

Ayers was born in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, on December 26, 1944. His father, Thomas G. Ayers, was a successful businessman who became CEO of Commonwealth Edison. His mother, Mary Louise (née Albertson), was a homemaker. Ayers has two younger brothers, John and Thomas.
Ayers attended public schools in Glen Ellyn, where he was an all-star athlete in baseball and football. He graduated from Glenbard West High School in 1962. He then enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he studied English and philosophy. He became active in the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement. He graduated from Michigan with a BA in 1967.
Ayers began his teaching career in the Detroit public schools. He then moved to New York City, where he taught at an alternative school for troubled youth. In 1970, he returned to the University of Michigan to pursue a PhD in education.
Ayers became involved in the Weather Underground, a radical left-wing group that advocated armed revolution against the US government. The group carried out a series of bombings of government buildings in the early 1970s. Ayers was not charged with any crime, but he was widely denounced as a terrorist.
