Bernard Sherman, also known as “Bernie” or “Barry”, is a Canadian businessman and philanthropist. He is the chairman and CEO of Apotex, one of the largest generic pharmaceutical companies in the world. He has a net worth of US$4.77 billion as of March 2021.
Bernie was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on February 25, 1942. His parents, Jack and Sarah Sherman, were Jewish immigrants from Poland. He has two older sisters, Phyllis and Gloria. He attended Harbord Collegiate Institute and then the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1963.
Bernie began his career working for his father’s pharmaceutical company, Empire Laboratories. In 1974, he founded Apotex with $6,000 in seed money. The company quickly grew and became one of the leading generic drug manufacturers in the world.
Apotex has been involved in a number of legal disputes, most notably with Pfizer over the patent for the popular anti-depressant drug Effexor. In 2006, Apotex was ordered to pay Pfizer $34 million in damages.
Bernie is a major philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to various causes. He has also been active in Jewish causes, and is a major supporter of the state of Israel.
Bernie is married to Honey Sherman, and they have four children: Lauren, Jonathon, Alexandra, and Nicole.
