Barry Goldwater was born on January 2, 1909, in Phoenix, Arizona. His parents were Baron Goldwater and Hattie Josephine Williams. He had four siblings: Robert, Joanne, Gloria, and Peggy. Goldwater’s father was a successful businessman who owned a department store called Goldwater’s. His mother was a homemaker. Goldwater’s grandfather, Meyer Goldwasser, was a Polish Jew who immigrated to the United States in the mid-19th century.
Goldwater was educated at Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and at the University of Arizona. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1930 with a degree in economics.
Goldwater’s career began in the family business. He eventually became the president of Goldwater’s department store. In 1940, he opened a jewelry store called Barry Goldwater & Company. He also became involved in politics and was elected to the Phoenix City Council in 1949.
In 1952, Goldwater ran for the United States Senate but was defeated by Democrat Ernest McFarland. He ran again in 1958 and this time was successful. He served in the Senate from 1959 to 1965.
In 1964, Goldwater was the Republican nominee for president. He lost to Democrat Lyndon Johnson in a landslide. After his defeat, Goldwater returned to the Senate and served until 1987.
Goldwater was married twice. His first wife was Peggy Johnson whom he married in 1934. They had four children: Joanne, Peggy, Barry, and Michael. Goldwater’s second wife was Susan Wechsler whom he married in 1992.
Goldwater died on May 29, 1998, at the age of 89.
Goldwater was a conservative Republican and an outspoken critic of communism. He was also a strong supporter of Israel. In his later years, he became more libertarian in his views.
Goldwater’s net worth was estimated to be $8 million at the time of his death.
