Bai was born in Chengdu, China, on October 10, 1970. Her parents divorced when she was two years old, and she was raised by her grandparents. When she was 14, she was sent to a labor camp for “re-education” after her grandfather was accused of being a counter-revolutionary. Bai spent a year in the camp before being released.
After her release, Bai moved to Beijing to live with her aunt. She enrolled in the Central Academy of Drama, where she studied acting. After graduation, she began her acting career with the Beijing People’s Art Theatre.
Bai’s first film role was in the Chinese film The Last Emperor (1987). She then appeared in a number of Chinese films and television shows before making her Hollywood debut in The Crow (1994).
Since then, Bai has appeared in a number of American films and television shows, including Wild Wild West (1999), Anna and the King (1999), Red Corner (1997), and Crank: High Voltage (2009). She has also appeared in several independent films, such as The Beautiful Country (2004) and Three…Extremes (2004).
Bai has been nominated for several awards, including an Independent Spirit Award and a Satellite Award. She won the Best Actress award at the Fantasporto Film Festival for her role in The Crow.
Bai Ling is currently single. She has one daughter, who was born in 2006.
