Arne Naess, Jr. (born January 27, 1937) is a Norwegian mountaineer, philosopher, and environmentalist. He is best known for his work in the philosophy of deep ecology, and was the father of the late mountaineer and adventurer Arne Naess.
Naess was born in Oslo, Norway, the son of ship-owner and politician Arne Naess and his wife Ragnhild. He had two brothers, Jan and Espen. His father was a well-known figure in Norwegian public life, and served as a member of parliament and cabinet minister. His mother was also active in politics, and was a leading member of the Norwegian Women’s Public Health Association.
Naess was educated at the University of Oslo, where he studied philosophy and literature. He became interested in mountaineering while still a student, and made several expeditions to the Alps and other mountain ranges. In 1959, he made the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger with fellow Norwegian climber Børge Ousland.
Naess’s philosophical career began with his work on the concept of “identification” in 1963. This was followed by a series of articles and books on various aspects of philosophy, including aesthetics, epistemology, and ethics. In 1973, he published the book “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions”, which was influential in the philosophy of science.
In the late 1970s, Naess became interested in environmental issues, and began to develop the philosophy of deep ecology. This is based on the belief that humans are just one part of the natural world, and that we should live in harmony with nature. Deep ecology is sometimes criticized for being anti-human, but Naess has always insisted that it is not.
In the 1980s, Naess was active in the movement to stop construction of a dam in the valley of the Alta River in Norway. The dam would have flooded a large area of wilderness, and Naess argued that this was unacceptable from an ecological point of view. The dam was eventually built, but Naess’s campaign helped to raise awareness of environmental issues in Norway.
Naess has also been active in the peace movement, and has campaigned against nuclear weapons and nuclear power. He was a member of the Norwegian delegation to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, where he helped to draft the “Rio Declaration on Environment and Development”.
Naess is currently retired from academic life, but remains active in environmental campaigning. He is also a keen mountaineer, and has made several expeditions to Nepal and Tibet. In 2003, at the age of 66, he made a solo ascent of Mount Everest.
Naess has been married three times. His first wife was Ingrid Christensen, with whom he had two sons, Arne and Espen. His second wife was Liv Ulvik, with whom he had a daughter, Ragnhild. His third wife is Sissel Rogndokken, with whom he has two sons, Anders and Ole-Johan.
Naess has an estimated net worth of $5 million.
