Ariel Sharon was an Israeli general and politician who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Israel from 2001 until 2006. Sharon was a commander in the Israeli Army during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and fought in the 1967 Six-Day War. He later served as Minister of Defense and Foreign Minister. As Prime Minister, Sharon oversaw Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Sharon was born on February 26, 1928, in Kfar Malal, British Mandate of Palestine, to parents Samuil and Vera Scheinerman. He had two brothers, Haim and Gur. Sharon’s father was a farmer and his mother was a schoolteacher. Sharon was educated at a local elementary school and later attended the agricultural school at Kibbutz Givat Hashlosha.
Sharon’s military career began in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, where he fought as a member of the newly formed Israeli Army. He saw action in the 1967 Six-Day War and later served as a commander in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Sharon rose to the rank of Major General in the Israeli Army and was appointed Chief of Staff in 1981. He retired from the military in 1983.
Sharon entered politics in 1984 and was elected to the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, as a member of the Likud Party. He served in a number of ministerial positions, including Minister of Defense and Foreign Minister. In 2001, Sharon was elected Prime Minister of Israel.
As Prime Minister, Sharon oversaw Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. He also implemented a number of economic reforms and increased security measures in response to the Second Intifada. Sharon suffered a stroke in 2005 and was incapacitated for the remainder of his term in office. He resigned as Prime Minister in 2006 and was succeeded by Ehud Olmert.
Sharon died on January 11, 2014, at the age of 85.
