Annie Lennox is a Scottish singer, songwriter, political activist and philanthropist. She rose to fame in the 1980s with her new wave-synthpop band, The Eurythmics, and has since had a successful solo career. Her work has encompassed a wide range of genres, including pop, rock, soul, R&B, and electronica. She has sold more than 80 million records worldwide.
Lennox was born on Christmas Day 1954 in Aberdeen, Scotland, to Dorothy (née Ferguson) and Thomas Allison Lennox. She has two older siblings: a brother, David, and a sister, Barbara. Her parents were both of Irish descent; her father was a Catholic, and her mother was a Protestant. Lennox was brought up in a middle-class home in Aberdeen. Her early education was at Elgin Academy, where she excelled in music and drama.
Lennox began her musical career as a member of the new wave band The Tourists in 1975. The band released three albums and had several hit singles, but they disbanded in 1980. Lennox then formed The Eurythmics with fellow musician Dave Stewart. The band released their first album, In the Garden, in 1981. The album was a commercial success, reaching number two in the UK charts.
The Eurythmics achieved international success with their next album, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), which was released in 1983. The album topped the charts in the UK and the US, and the title track became a worldwide hit. The band went on to release a string of successful albums and singles throughout the 1980s.
In 1992, Lennox released her first solo album, Diva. The album was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and selling more than four million copies worldwide. It spawned the hit singles “Why” and “Walking on Broken Glass”. Lennox’s second solo album, Medusa, was released in 1995. The album was another commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and selling more than six million copies worldwide. It spawned the hit singles “No More I Love You’s” and “A Whiter Shade of Pale”.
Lennox has won numerous awards throughout her career, including eight Brit Awards, four Grammy Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and an Oscar. In 2004, she was made a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II for her “outstanding contribution to music”. In 2005, she was awarded the Polar Music Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
Lennox has been involved in many charitable causes throughout her career. In 1985, she co-founded The Circle of Health International, a charity that provides health care to women and children in developing countries. In 2005, she established The SING Campaign, an organisation that raises awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. In 2010, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her “services to music and charity”.
Lennox has been married twice: first to Radha Raman (1982-1986), with whom she has one daughter; and secondly to Israeli film producer Uri Fruchtmann (1988-2000), with whom she has two daughters. She currently lives in London with her partner, Dr Mitch Besser.

Quotes

1 | What's best for the future of Scotland, her population and generations to come? Would breaking away from the UK bring long term benefits, or would the cessation of union be an unmitigated disaster from which there would be no turning back? From my perspective, I think the issue is complex and there is certainly a strong element of risk. Personally, I'm neither a gambler nor soothsayer and my view doesn't count in any case. One thing I do know is that the decision is not something to be taken lightly, or to be swayed by heady patriotic emotion. It will be taken by the citizens of Scotland themselves, who need to seriously weigh up the pros and cons, as the responsibility lies wholeheartedly upon their shoulders. |
2 | If people like your music you can't guarantee they're going to love you. |
3 | On being awarded the OBE: As somewhat of a renegade, it either means I've done something terribly right--or they've done something terribly wrong. In any case, whatever powers that be have deemed me worthy of such a recognition, I'm getting my fake leopard pillbox hat dusted and ready. |
4 | I love to be individual, to step beyond gender. |
5 | Historically, the image of women in pop music has been so totally ornamental - sexual, but predictably so. It's hard to tell how far women's individuality has come in the past twenty years. Certainly, if you look at the pop charts as a measuring stick, you'd think it hasn't come far at all. But women do feel less like victims now than they did twenty years ago. At heart I'm a feminist, but I'm also a feminist for men. Men should be liberated from the roles that are foisted on them also. |
6 | [on being private about her life] What did you expect? I'm human; I feel what anybody else feels. There is a big difference between what I do onstage and what I do in my private life. I don't put my living room on magazine pages. I'm not intensely private - I talk a great deal about my life and my work - I just don't play the game to excess. |
