Rogers began running track and field at an early age and quickly showed promise as a middle-distance runner. In high school, she won the California state championship in the 800-meter run as a senior. She also set a then-state record in the event with a time of 2:03.91.
Rogers went on to compete collegiately for the University of California, Berkeley. She was a two-time All-American in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2009 and fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2010.
