Barton was born in Baltimore, Maryland to parents Michele and George Barton. He has two older sisters, Ashley and Amber. Barton attended Lake Clifton High School in Baltimore, where he was a three-time All-City selection in basketball. He then played college basketball for the University of Memphis. As a junior, he was named Conference USA Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.
Barton was drafted with the 40th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He was later traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2015. In his first season with the Nuggets, Barton averaged 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team that year.
Barton has career averages of 12.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. He is currently in his eighth NBA season and is signed with the Nuggets through the 2020-21 season.
