Ted Cohen was born in New York City, New York on December 6, 1949. He is the son of Jewish immigrants, Rose (née Levitt) and Samuel Cohen. His father was a garment worker and his mother was a homemaker. He has two brothers, Jerry and Robert.
Cohen attended public schools in New York City. He graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1971.
After graduation, Cohen began his career as a research analyst at Drexel Burnham Lambert. He later joined the investment banking firm, Lehman Brothers, where he worked for eight years.
In 1980, Cohen co-founded TPG Capital (then known as Texas Pacific Group) with James Coulter and William S. Price III. TPG is one of the largest private equity firms in the world with over $100 billion in assets under management.
Some of TPG’s notable investments include Burger King, J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, and Petco. As of 2019, Ted Cohen’s net worth is estimated to be $2.1 billion.
Cohen is married to Susan Levin Cohen. They have three children together: Jordan, Jesse, and Jamie.
