Susan Anspach was born on November 23, 1942 in Queens, New York City, the daughter of Ann (née Sperling) and Samuel Anspach, a lawyer. She had a sister, Nancy. Anspach was raised in the Jewish faith. She attended the High School of Performing Arts and then studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
Anspach’s film debut was in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969). She gained prominence for her role in Play It Again, Sam (1972), for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in such films as Blume in Love (1973), The Four Seasons (1981), Baby Boom (1987), and Black Rain (1989).
On television, Anspach starred in the short-lived series The City (1995) and had a recurring role on One Life to Live (2003–2004).
Anspach was married to Jack Nicholson from 1970 to 1971; they had one child together, Caleb James Goddard. She was also married to Mark Goddard from 1977 to 1981; they had one child together, Christopher Neil Goddard.
Anspach died on April 2, 2018, at the age of 75.
