Stone Gossard is an American musician and songwriter, best known as the guitarist for the grunge band Pearl Jam. He is also a member of the supergroup Temple of the Dog, and has released several solo albums.
Gossard was born in Seattle, Washington, on July 20, 1966, to parents Nancy and Doug Gossard. He has two sisters, Holly and Heidi. Gossard’s father was a real estate broker, and his mother was a homemaker.
Gossard attended high school at Seattle’s Shorewood High School. He was a talented baseball player and was offered a scholarship to play at the University of Washington, but decided to pursue a career in music instead.
Gossard began his musical career in the early 1980s as a member of the punk rock band March of Crimes. He later joined the hardcore punk band Green River, which also featured future Pearl Jam members Jeff Ament and Mark Arm. Green River released two albums before disbanding in 1988.
Gossard then formed the grunge band Mother Love Bone with Ament and Arm’s fellow Green River bandmate Bruce Fairweather. Mother Love Bone released one album, Apple, in 1990, before lead singer Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose.
Gossard and Ament then formed the band Pearl Jam with vocalist Eddie Vedder and drummer Dave Krusen. Pearl Jam went on to become one of the most successful bands of the 1990s, selling millions of albums and headlining the Lollapalooza festival in 1992.
Gossard has also been a member of the supergroup Temple of the Dog, which released one album in 1991. He has released three solo albums: Bayleaf (2002), Moonlander (2013), and Stone Horse (2017).
Gossard is married to Jennifer Jaffe, with whom he has two daughters. He has an estimated net worth of $60 million.
