Sharon Elizabeth Lawrence (born June 29, 1961) is an American actress, singer, and dancer. She is best known for her roles as Sylvia Costas Sipowicz in the ABC drama series NYPD Blue, for which she won two Primetime Emmy Awards, and as Janet Wood in the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan.

Lawrence was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and grew up in Raleigh. Her father, George Lawrence, was a research chemist, and her mother, Norma Lawrence, was a homemaker. She has two older sisters, Debbie and Beth. Lawrence began her acting career while still in high school. She appeared in community theater productions and school plays. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Lawrence’s first professional acting job was in a national tour of the musical Grease. She then moved to New York City and appeared in several Off-Broadway productions. Her first television role was on the soap opera Ryan’s Hope. She appeared in a number of made-for-television movies and guest-starred on television shows such as Cheers, Miami Vice, and Spenser: For Hire.
In 1993, Lawrence was cast as Sylvia Costas Sipowicz in the ABC police drama series NYPD Blue. She played the role for six seasons, and won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her performance.
In 1999, Lawrence left NYPD Blue to star in the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan. The show ran for four seasons, and Lawrence won a Golden Globe Award for her performance.

After Suddenly Susan ended, Lawrence appeared in a number of made-for-television movies and guest-starred on television shows such as JAG and The Guardian. In 2005, she had a recurring role on the ABC drama series Desperate Housewives.
In 2007, Lawrence returned to series television with the Lifetime drama series Army Wives. She played the role of Claudia Joy Holden for six seasons, and won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance.
Lawrence has been married twice. Her first husband was actor Robert Desiderio, whom she married in 1983. The couple divorced in 1988. Her second husband is Dr. Tom Apostle, whom she married in 2002. The couple has two children together.
