Robert Smigel is an American actor, comedian, writer, and director. He is best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, where he has been a writer and performer since 1985. He has also created and starred in several comedy shows for television, including The Dana Carvey Show, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and The Ambiguously Gay Duo.
Smigel was born in New York City, the son of Irwin Smigel and Lucia Smigel. He has two brothers, Jeffrey and Andrew. Smigel was raised in a Jewish family. He attended Harvard University, where he wrote for the Harvard Lampoon.
After graduation, Smigel moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in comedy writing. He worked as a writer for several television shows, including Late Night with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live. He also wrote and directed several comedy shorts for Saturday Night Live, including “The Ambiguously Gay Duo” and “TV Funhouse.”
In 2001, Smigel created and starred in his own comedy show, The Dana Carvey Show. The show was short-lived but earned critical acclaim.
In 2003, Smigel created and voiced the character of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a puppet who appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Triumph became a popular character, appearing in his own series of comedy specials and making guest appearances on other shows.
In 2006, Smigel wrote and directed the film You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, starring Adam Sandler. The film was a box office success.
Smigel has been married to Michele Siegel since 1993. They have two children.
