FactLead guitarist of King Crimson.

Robert Fripp (born 16 May 1946) is an English musician, songwriter and record producer who is best known as the guitarist, founder and longest-serving member of the progressive rock band King Crimson. He has also worked extensively as a session musician and producer, and collaborated with a wide range of other artists.

Fripp was born in Wimborne Minster, Dorset, and was educated at Bryanston School. He first played guitar in a band called The Ravens with his brother Richard (who later founded the League of Gentlemen comedy troupe) and some friends. He later joined another band called The League of Gentlemen, which released one single before disbanding.

In 1966, Fripp met fellow musician and future King Crimson bandmate Greg Lake, with whom he formed the group Giles, Giles and Fripp. The group released two albums before disbanding in 1968.

Fripp then joined King Crimson, which released its debut album In the Court of the Crimson King in 1969. The album was a critical and commercial success, and established King Crimson as one of the leading bands of the progressive rock genre.

Over the next few years, King Crimson released a number of successful albums, including In the Wake of Poseidon (1970), Lizard (1970), Islands (1971) and Earthbound (1972). The band’s lineup changed frequently, with Fripp being the only constant member.

In 1974, King Crimson disbanded, but reformed in 1981 with a new lineup that featured Fripp, Lake and drummer Bill Bruford. The band released three more albums before disbanding again in 1984.

In 1994, King Crimson reformed with a new lineup that featured Fripp, Bruford, singer-songwriter Adrian Belew and bassist Tony Levin. The band has released four studio albums since then, the most recent being The Construkction of Light (2000).

Fripp has also worked as a session musician and producer for a number of artists, including David Bowie, Blondie, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno. He has also released several solo albums, the most recent being A Scarcity of Miracles (2011).

Fripp is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He was ranked number 40 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” in 2003, and number 70 in the same magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” in 2010.

Fripp has been married three times: to Jeannette Snelson (1971-1972), Toyah Willcox (1986-2001) and Suzan Steffen (2003-present). He has two daughters from his first marriage: Kate (born 1972) and Juliet (born 1974).
