Robert Ayers is an American football defensive end who is currently a free agent. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He has also played for the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Ayers was born on September 6, 1985 in Newark, New Jersey. He was the youngest of three children born to Robert and Deborah Ayers. His father was a former semi-professional football player and his mother was a schoolteacher. Ayers’ older sister, Nicole, is a lawyer and his older brother, David, is a doctor. Ayers’ parents divorced when he was five years old and he was raised by his mother in Newark.
Ayers attended Newark Public Schools and played football and basketball. He graduated from Newark Central High School in 2003. Ayers then attended the University of Michigan, where he played defensive end for the Michigan Wolverines football team from 2004 to 2008. He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and was named the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year as a senior in 2008.
Ayers was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played for the Broncos from 2009 to 2013. He then signed with the New York Giants in 2014 and played for them for two seasons. Ayers signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016 and played for them for one season. He was released by the Buccaneers in 2017 and has been a free agent since then.
Ayers has appeared in two Super Bowls, winning one with the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. He has also been selected to two Pro Bowls, in 2012 and 2014.
Ayers is married to his wife, Tanya, and they have two children together.
