Ravi Shankar (born 13 May 1956) is an Indian spiritual leader. He is the founder of the Art of Living Foundation which, through its various service projects, promotes yoga, meditation and powerful breathing techniques including the Sudarshan Kriya for betterment of the individual and society.
Early life and background
Ravi Shankar was born on 13 May 1956 in Pune, India, to a Tamil family. His father, R. S. Venkat Ratnam, was a diplomat and his mother, Smt. Vijaya Lakshmi, was a housewife. He has a younger sister, Ananda Shankar Jayant.
Shankar’s early education took place in India and England. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Delhi and his Master of Arts degree in sociology from the University of London.
Career
In 1981, Shankar founded the Art of Living Foundation, a volunteer-based international NGO that aims to relieve individual stress, societal problems and violence. The foundation has since grown to over 3 million members in 156 countries. It offers courses in yoga and meditation through its network of over 9,000 service projects.
The Art of Living Foundation has been active in disaster relief since its inception. It has provided relief to victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, the 2010 Haiti earthquake and more recently to victims of the 2015 Nepal earthquake.
Shankar has also been involved in various social initiatives such as prison reform, environmental sustainability and women’s empowerment. He has addressed the United Nations General Assembly and the World Economic Forum on numerous occasions.
In 2016, Shankar was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor, for his contributions to spirituality and social work.
