Merck & Co., Inc., d.b.a. Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) outside the United States and Canada, is an American multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Kenilworth, New Jersey, United States. The company was established in 1891 as the United States subsidiary of the German company Merck, which was founded in 1668 by the Merck family.

Early Life

Merck & Co. was founded in 1891 as the U.S. subsidiary of German company Merck. The company was established by George Merck, who was born in New York City on October 18, 1856 to a German father and a Swiss mother. Merck’s father, Emanuel Merck, was a chemist and the head of E. Merck & Co., a pharmaceutical company in Darmstadt, Germany. George Merck was educated at Columbia College and the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career at his father’s company in 1876 as a clerk and eventually became president of the company in 1888.

Career

In 1891, Merck & Co. was established in New York City as the U.S. subsidiary of German company Merck. The company initially sold only three products: bismuth subnitrate, calomel, and quinine sulfate. In 1892, Merck & Co. began selling its first proprietary drug, mercurial ointment, which was used to treat dandruff and other scalp conditions. In 1899, the company began selling its first patented drug, Salvarsan, which was used to treat syphilis. In 1902, Merck & Co. was acquired by Sharp & Dohme (now known as MSD), a U.S.-based subsidiary of German company Bayer AG. The company was renamed Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) in 1917.

In the 1920s, MSD began marketing its first blockbuster drug, insulin, which was used to treat diabetes. In the 1930s, MSD introduced a number of new drugs, including sulfa drugs (used to treat infections) and vitamins A and D (used to treat nutritional deficiencies). In the 1940s, MSD introduced penicillin (used to treat infections) and cortisone (used to treat inflammation). In the 1950s, MSD introduced a number of new vaccines, including the polio vaccine and the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. In the 1960s, MSD introduced a number of new drugs, including the birth control pill and the first human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. In the 1970s, MSD introduced a number of new cancer treatments, including cisplatin and taxol. In the 1980s, MSD introduced the first HIV/AIDS treatment, AZT. In the 1990s, MSD introduced the first protease inhibitor for HIV/AIDS treatment, indinavir. In the 2000s, MSD introduced a number of new drugs, including the HPV vaccine Gardasil and the cholesterol-lowering drug Zetia.

Today, MSD is one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. The company employs more than 70,000 people worldwide and has operations in more than 140 countries. MSD’s products are sold in more than 175 countries. The company’s research and development budget is more than $9 billion per year. MSD has more than 30 research and development facilities around the world, including facilities in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
