Memphis Bleek, born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 29, 1978, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. The youngest of three children, he was raised in the Marcy Houses, a public housing development in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. His mother, Tara, worked as a nurse, and his father, Kenneth, was a welder. Memphis began rapping at the age of 12 and made his first recording two years later.
In 1995, he met Jay-Z, who was impressed by his rapping ability and signed him to his record label, Roc-A-Fella Records. Memphis released his debut album, Coming of Age, in 1996. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching the top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over one million copies. Memphis’s second album, The Understanding, was released in 2000 and reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 2003, Memphis released his third album, M.A.D.E., which was another commercial and critical success. The album featured the hit single “Lean Back”, which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Memphis has since released two more albums, 534 (2006) and The Process (2010).
Throughout his career, Memphis has collaborated with a number of other artists, including Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, and 50 Cent. He has also appeared on television shows such as Entourage and Hawaii Five-0.
