Fact | In 1944, after Paris was liberated by the Allies, Chevalier was arrested by French authorities on charges of collaborating with the Nazis during the occupation and put on trial. He was acquitted, but feelings ran high against him among the French public and government, and it was several years before he was granted a visa to leave the country. |
Maurice Chevalier was born on September 12, 1888, in Paris, France. His parents were both of humble means, and his father worked as a house painter. Chevalier was the fifth of six children, and he was educated at a local primary school. When he was 10 years old, his father died, and Chevalier was forced to leave school and find work to support his family. He found employment as a busker, singing and dancing on the streets of Paris.
Chevalier’s big break came in 1907 when he was hired to perform at the famous Moulin Rouge nightclub. He quickly became a sensation, and his career took off. He went on to star in a number of successful films, including “Love Me Tonight” (1932) and “Gigi” (1958). He also recorded a number of popular songs, such as “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” and “Mimi.”
Chevalier was married three times and had four children. His first marriage, to Yvonne Vallée, ended in divorce. His second marriage, to Nita Raya, lasted from 1934 until her death in 1977. His third marriage, to Simone Signoret, lasted from 1952 until her death in 1985.
Chevalier died on January 1, 1972, in Paris, France. He was 83 years old.

1 | I am too old for women, too old for that extra glass of wine, too old for sports. All I have left is the audience, but I have found it quite enough. |
2 | [In response to a contract offer from Irving Thalberg if he would consent to a screen test] Either people are interested in hiring me or they're not. I don't audition any more. |
3 | [on Grace Kelly] Grace Kelly was a Dresden doll, I thought, with a kind of platinum beneath the delicate porcelain, a beautiful girl who I felt was always in control of her world. |
4 | [on Clara Bow] Clara Bow, with her tousled mane of red hair and intense black eyes, who generated sex appeal and excitement with breathtaking ease. |
5 | Many a man has fallen love with a girl in a light so dim he would not have chosen a suit by it. |
6 | [on Jeanette MacDonald] I later heard her referred to as the "Iron Butterfly", although I was surprised to hear that she found that amusing. I never thought she had much of a sense of humor. When we worked together she always objected to anyone telling a risqué story. |
7 | Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative. |
8 | [on why he preferred personal appearances to films] The cinema is rather like a beautiful woman whom you would court only by telephone. |
9 | An artist carries on throughout his life a mysterious, uninterrupted conversation with his public. |
10 | Love the public the way you love your mother. |
