Mack 10 was born in Inglewood, California, on August 9, 1971. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was raised by his mother in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. He began his career as a member of the rap group Westside Connection, along with Ice Cube and WC. The group released their debut album, Bow Down, in 1996. The album was a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart.

Mack 10’s solo career began in 1997 with the release of his debut album, Based on a True Story. The album was a commercial success, reaching number three on the Billboard 200 chart. His second album, The Recipe, was released in 1998 and reached number six on the Billboard 200 chart. In 1999, Mack 10 released his third album, Bang or Ball, which reached number eight on the Billboard 200 chart.
