Born in Kerala, India, in 1955, Ali was the eldest of seven children. His father was a small-time businessman who ran a grocery store. Ali did his early schooling in Kerala and then went on to study at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England.

He started his career working for an audit firm in Abu Dhabi. He then set up his own trading company in the 1970s, which imported food and other consumer goods from India to the Middle East. The company was successful and Ali soon expanded his business into other areas such as construction, retail, and hospitality.

The Lulu Group now has a presence in 40 countries and employs over 175,000 people. It has a turnover of over US$8.4 billion.

Ali is a generous philanthropist and has donated millions of dollars to various causes. He has also set up the Lulu Foundation, which supports education, health care, and social welfare initiatives in India and the Middle East.
