Born in Miami, Florida, on December 22, 1961, Luther Campbell was the fifth of thirteen children. His father was a truck driver, and his mother was a homemaker. Growing up in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Campbell was exposed to a variety of music, including soul, R&B, and disco. He began playing drums in his church band at an early age, and later took up DJing.
In the late 1970s, Campbell began working as a promotions director for a local radio station. It was there that he first met Chris Wong Won, who would later become one half of 2 Live Crew. The two men formed a close friendship, and Wong Won introduced Campbell to the world of hip hop. Campbell soon became a fan of the genre, and began promoting local hip hop shows.
In 1984, Campbell and Wong Won formed 2 Live Crew. The group quickly became one of the most popular hip hop acts in the country, thanks in part to their over-the-top stage show, which often featured scantily-clad women dancing provocatively. The group’s debut album, “2 Live Crew Is What We Are,” was released in 1986 and featured the hit single “Throw the D.”
2 Live Crew’s follow-up album, “Move Somethin’,” was released in 1988 and featured the hit single “Get It Girl.” The album also caused controversy due to its explicit lyrics and sexually-suggestive artwork. In 1989, the group’s third album, “As Nasty As They Wanna Be,” was released. The album was declared obscene by a federal judge, and Campbell was arrested for promoting it. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of 2 Live Crew, effectively making their album legal.
In the early 1990s, Campbell began working on his solo career. He released his debut album, “Banned in the USA,” in 1990. The album featured the hit single of the same name, which samples Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA.” In 1991, Campbell released his second album, “Luke Skyywalker.” The album featured the hit single “I Wanna Rock,” which samples Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”
In 1992, Campbell formed his own record label, Luke Records. The label’s first release was Campbell’s third album, “Ride Wit Me.” The album featured the hit single “Do What I Feel,” which samples Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” In 1993, Campbell released his fourth album, “Uncle Luke.” The album featured the hit single “I Wanna Rock (Remix),” which samples Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”
In 1994, Campbell released his fifth album, “Raise the Roof.” The album featured the hit single “Raise the Roof,” which samples The Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing.” In 1995, Campbell released his sixth album, “Hits.” The album featured the hit single “Scrub Da Ground,” which samples Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”
In 1996, Campbell released his seventh album, “Luke Skyywalker Live: In Concert.” The album featured live performances of some of his biggest hits. In 1997, Campbell released his eighth album, “The Best of Luke Skyywalker.” The album featured a collection of Campbell’s greatest hits.
In 1998, Campbell released his ninth album, “The Truth Hurts.” The album featured the hit single “I Believe I Can Fly,” which samples R. Kelly’s song of the same name. In 1999, Campbell released his tenth album, “Tha Truth.” The album featured the hit single “Raise Up,” which samples Petey Pablo’s song of the same name.
In 2000, Campbell released his eleventh album, “Luke Uncut: Uncensored & Unleashed.” The album featured previously unreleased tracks and remixes. In 2001, Campbell released his twelfth album, “Hits 2K1.” The album featured a collection of some of Campbell’s greatest hits.
