Lou Rawls was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 1, 1933. His parents, Lou and Carrie Rawls, divorced when he was four years old, and he was raised by his grandmother in the Ida B. Wells Homes public housing project on the city’s South Side. Rawls began singing in gospel choirs at the age of seven, and by the time he was a teenager he was performing with such noted gospel groups as the Pilgrim Travelers and the Soul Stirrers. In 1955, he joined the United States Army and served for two years.
Rawls began his professional singing career in the early 1960s, performing in nightclubs and on the radio in Los Angeles. He released his first album, Lou Rawls – Live!, in 1962. The following year he released his second album, Stormy Monday, which included his first hit single, “Love Is a Hurtin’ Thing”.
Rawls’ career took off in 1966 with the release of his album Lou Rawls – Live!, which went to number one on the Billboard R&B chart. The album’s success was followed by a string of hit singles, including “Your Good Thing (Is About to End)”, “Dead End Street”, and “A Natural Man”. Rawls continued to enjoy success throughout the 1970s and 1980s with such albums as All Things in Time (1976), Unmistakably Lou (1981), and Close Company (1986).
In 1995, Rawls was diagnosed with cancer, but he continued to perform and record. He released his final album, Lou Rawls – Live!, in 2006. He died of cancer on January 6, 2006 at the age of 72.
Rawls was a three-time Grammy Award winner and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. He was also a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts.
