Leo Sayer (born Gerard Hugh Sayer, 21 May 1948) is a British singer-songwriter, musician, and entertainer whose career has spanned more than four decades. His first seven hit singles in the United Kingdom were all written by him, and six of those were co-written with his producer Richard Perry. He has also had success as a songwriter, penning songs for other artists including Roger Daltrey, Cliff Richard, and Rod Stewart.
Sayer was born in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, England, to Sylvia (née Greenhalgh) and James Sayer. His father worked as a civil servant for the Ministry of Agriculture and his mother was a housewife. He has two sisters, Jane and Joanna. He attended Montpelier Primary School, Shoreham-by-Sea Grammar School for Boys, and Worthing Technical High School for Boys.
Sayer began his music career co-writing songs with David Courtney, including “Giving It All Away”, which was a hit for Roger Daltrey in 1973. He then secured a record deal with Chrysalis Records and released his debut album Silverbird in 1973. The album’s first single “One Man Band” reached the top 10 in the UK and was followed by the Top 5 hit “The Show Must Go On”.
Sayer’s second album, Just A Boy, was released in 1974 and yielded the UK Top 10 hit “Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)”. His third album, Another Year, was released in 1975 and contained the UK Top 10 hit “One of These Nights (I’m Gonna Win Your Love)”.
Sayer’s fourth album, Endless Flight, was released in 1976 and contained the hit singles “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” and “When I Need You”. His fifth album, Leo Sayer, was released in 1977 and contained the UK Top 10 hit “Thunder in My Heart”.

Sayer’s tenth album, Voice in My Head, was released in 1983 and contained the UK Top 10 hit “Orchard Road”. His eleventh album, Silverbird / Endless Flight / Leo Sayer / More Than I Can Say / Touching Home / Voice in My Head / Have You Ever Been in Love?, was a compilation album released in 1984.
Sayer’s twelfth album, Right Here on Earth, was released in 1986 and contained the UK Top 10 hit “When I Give My Heart to You”. His thirteenth album, Cool Touch, was released in 1988 and contained the UK Top 10 hit “I Can’t Stop Loving You (Though I Try)”.
Sayer’s fourteenth album, Slow Motion, was released in 1990 and contained the UK Top 10 hit “More Than Words Can Say”. His fifteenth album, The Very Best of Leo Sayer – 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection, was a compilation album released in 2000.

1 | I really don't write for anybody else, I only write for myself. I'm one of those terribly self-centred kind of singer-songwriters who can only really feel my own passion, so when Dolly Parton or Tina Turner or Phil Collins has sung my songs before...Céline Dion...it's like a real honour. |
2 | Live performance is my mainstay because record sales are down from what they were in the Seventies. This isn't just because of illegal downloading - I think these days we are surrounded by so much music all the time there is less incentive to own it. |
