Joyce Brothers was born on October 20, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia. She had two sisters, Elaine and Marilyn. Joyce attended public schools in Brooklyn and graduated from high school at the age of 16. She then attended Cornell University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1948. After graduation, she married Marvin Brothers, a medical student. The couple moved to Detroit, where Marvin completed his medical training.
Joyce began her career as a newspaper columnist, writing a advice column for the Detroit Free Press. She then became a radio personality, hosting a call-in show on WKBD in Detroit. In 1958, she began appearing on television, hosting a show on WJBK in Detroit. In 1959, she moved to New York City and began appearing on The Tonight Show. She also began writing books on psychology, including The Psychology of Women (1964) and What Every Woman Should Know About Men (1965).
In the 1970s, Joyce began appearing on game shows, including The $10,000 Pyramid and The $20,000 Pyramid. She also hosted her own syndicated talk show, The Joyce Brothers Show. In 1985, she appeared on the reality show Super Password. In the 1990s, she hosted a radio show on WOR in New York City.
Joyce continued to write books and appear on television throughout her career. In 2006, she appeared on the reality show Celebrity Wife Swap. She died on May 13, 2013, at the age of 85.
Joyce Brothers was one of the most famous psychologists of her generation. She was an advice columnist, radio and television personality, and author of several books on psychology. She appeared on numerous game shows and reality shows over the course of her career. Joyce died in 2013 at the age of 85.
