Roberts began his career working as a staff assistant for then-Congressman Mel Levine. He later worked as a field organizer for the 1992 presidential campaign of Bill Clinton. After the election, Roberts served as a special assistant in the Clinton administration. In 1994, he left the administration to work as a lobbyist for the Motion Picture Association of America. In 2000, Roberts became a partner at the Washington, D.C.-based law firm of Williams & Connolly LLP.
