John Barry was born in York, England, on November 3, 1933. His parents, Jack and Doris (née Johnson) Barry, were of Irish descent. His father worked as a carpenter and his mother was a homemaker. He had two brothers, Michael and Peter. Barry was educated at St. Peter’s School in York and later attended the York College of Music.
Barry began his career as a musician, playing the trumpet in various bands. He later switched to arranging and composing, and his big break came when he was asked to arrange the theme tune for the James Bond film “Dr. No” (1962). He went on to score many other Bond films, as well as such classics as “Born Free” (1966), “Out of Africa” (1985) and “Dances with Wolves” (1990).
Barry won five Academy Awards for his work in film music, and he was also nominated for four Golden Globe Awards and four Grammy Awards. In 1999, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II. He died of a heart attack on January 30, 2011, at the age of 77.
Barry had a long and successful career in film music, composing the scores for more than 100 films. He won five Academy Awards for his work, and he was also nominated for four Golden Globe Awards and four Grammy Awards. In 1999, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.
Barry was married three times. His first wife was Jane Birkin, with whom he had one daughter, Kate. His second wife was Laurie McCallum, with whom he had two sons, Jonathon and Christopher. His third wife was Barbara Broccoli, with whom he had one son, Michael G. Barry.
Barry died of a heart attack on January 30, 2011, at the age of 77.
