Jeff Pope is an English screenwriter, producer, and director. He is best known for his work on the ITV crime drama series Cracker and the BBC One comedy-drama series The Royle Family.
Pope was born in Liverpool, England, on 9 October 1957. His parents were both teachers. He has two older sisters. Pope was educated at Liverpool College, an independent school for boys in the city. He then studied English at the University of Leicester.
Pope began his career as a journalist, working for the Liverpool Echo and Granada Television. He then moved into television scriptwriting, working on the soap opera Coronation Street and the drama series Prime Suspect. In 1995, he wrote and directed the television film Hillsborough, about the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.
Pope’s most successful work has been on the ITV crime drama series Cracker, which he wrote and produced between 1993 and 1995. The show was a critical and commercial success, and won several awards, including BAFTAs for Best Drama Series and Best Actor (for Robbie Coltrane).
Pope has also written and produced the BBC One comedy-drama series The Royle Family, which ran from 1998 to 2012. The show was a huge success, winning numerous awards, including BAFTAs for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor (for Ricky Tomlinson).
Pope’s other credits include the films Mrs Brown (1997) and Philomena (2013), and the TV series The Street (2006-2009) and From There to Here (2014).
Pope has been married to his wife, Sue, since 1982. They have two children.
