Jeanne Cooper was born on October 25, 1928 in Taft, California. Her parents were Mary Alice (née English) and Harry Wilber Cooper. She had two sisters, Helen and Hilda. Cooper attended Taft Union High School. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at a local oil company.
Cooper’s career began in the early 1950s when she started modeling. She appeared in several magazines, including Life, Look, and McCall’s. In 1954, she made her television debut on an episode of The Lone Ranger. The following year, she had a small role in the film The Ten Commandments.
Cooper’s breakout role came in 1957 when she was cast as Katherine Chancellor on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. She played the role for over 50 years, making her one of the longest-serving actors in television history. Cooper earned several Daytime Emmy Award nominations for her work on the show.
In addition to her work on television, Cooper appeared in several films throughout her career. Her film credits include The Best Man (1964), The Boston Strangler (1968), and Airport 1975 (1974).
Cooper was married to Harry Karl from 1959 to 1974. The couple had two daughters, Keaton and Caren. Cooper later married Gary Davidson in 1983. The couple divorced in 1991.
Cooper died on May 8, 2013 at the age of 84.

Despite not being an original cast member, she appeared in nearly every season of The Young and the Restless (1973)--the exceptions were in late January 1981, when her longtime friend Beverly Garland filled in for her due to illness; for six episodes in August 1986, when Gisele MacKenzie, took over also due to her illness; and in October 2011, when she took a medical leave and was temporarily replaced by Michael Learned. Cooper returned to her role,in December of that year.
