Jackson Browne is an American singer-songwriter and musician who has sold over 18 million albums in the United States. Browne’s music is characterized by his personal, introspective lyrics and melodic compositions. He has been a major figure in the Southern California music scene since the 1970s.
Browne was born on October 9, 1948, in Heidelberg, Germany, where his father, Clyde Jack Browne, was stationed as a U.S. Army serviceman. His mother, Beatrice Amanda (née Dahl), was a Swedish-American. His younger sister, Sylvia, was born in 1950. When Browne was three years old, his father died of a brain hemorrhage and the family returned to the United States, settling in Los Angeles, California.
Browne began playing guitar and writing songs at an early age. He attended Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, California, where he met future Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey. After graduating high school in 1966, Browne enrolled in Fullerton College, but he dropped out after one semester to pursue a career in music.
Browne’s self-titled debut album was released in 1972 and featured the hit single “Doctor My Eyes”, which peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His second album, For Everyman, was released later that year and featured the singles “Looking Into You” and “These Days”.
Browne’s 1974 album Late for the Sky featured the title track, which peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and “Fountain of Sorrow”, which peaked at #21. His 1976 album The Pretender featured the singles “Here Come Those Tears Again” and “The Pretender”, which peaked at #16 and #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, respectively.

The album featured the singles “Running on Empty” and “The Load-Out/Stay”, which peaked at #11 and #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, respectively.
Browne’s 1980 album Hold Out featured the singles “Boulevard” and “Somebody’s Baby”, which peaked at #7 and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, respectively. His 1982 album Lawyers in Love featured the singles “Tender Is the Night” and “For America”, which peaked at #19 and #33 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, respectively.
Browne’s 1986 album Lives in the Balance featured the title track, which peaked at #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His 1988 album World in Motion featured the single “In the Shape of a Heart”, which peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Browne’s 1992 album I’m Alive featured the title track, which peaked at #48 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His 1994 album Looking East featured the single “Sky Blue and Black”, which peaked at #52 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Browne has been nominated for fourteen Grammy Awards, winning once for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Somebody’s Baby” in 1982. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
Browne has been married three times: to Phyllis Major from 1975 to 1976; to Lynne Sweeney from 1982 to 1983; and to Dianna Cohen since 1991. He has three children: Ethan Zane (born 1979), Ryan Daniel (born 1991), and Maya Rose (born 1998).
